Ice blasting

Ice blasting is nowadays chiefly carried out by the German technical relief organisation THW, the German armed forces or in deep-sea shipping.

Although in this area the majority of blastings were also rendered superfluous by the development in shipping technology, especially in small waterways and natural rivers detached ice floes can make a blasting necessary.

Uncontrollably drifting floe fragments can cause considerable damage to bridges. Moreover, during thaw periods drifting floe fragments can pile up, causing the flooding of adjacent areas.

In the vicinity of locks the blasting of ice can ensure the unobstructed operation of the facility.

Ice blastings today play a rather insignificant part in the range of services offered by the Halter company.
